black widow (2014) #3 + black widow (2010) #1
Tumbling over the past year and a half has made me see the problems of gender roles that exist in media, but sometimes it gets to the point where I over analyze every single piece of television or film that I come across. (However this in no way means that I think feminist media criticism is wrong, or should be avoided!) Mostly I just over think everything.
I’ve thought about this a lot and I think the answer is MORE, and MORE DIVERSE female characters.
We’re used to having one or two female characters in a cast of mostly men, and hold them to a higher standard because of that. So all of feminism is resting on the shoulders of one female character - and that DOESN’T WORK. Because there isn’t one right way to be a woman.
If casts had more diversity of gender, we could have warrior women and non-warrior women, sexual women and non-sexual women, feminine and non-feminine, and mixtures of all of the above…all are completely legitimate ways to be a woman.
We’re used to seeing a lot of hypersexualized, scantily clad, one-dimensional stereotypes of women without stories or motives of their own. We respond by asking for characters that AREN’T THAT, but we may end up pushing too far in the opposite direction, and demonize traits like sexuality, conventional attractiveness, and traditional femininity as “sexist.” That’s why the most popular female characters are the ones that are most similar to male heroes - the Arya Starks - emotionally distant, unattached, solve their problems with violence, not remotely sexual. That’s fine too of course. I love Arya. It’s just not…the only way to be.
You know, when I screw up in front of guys, generally they make you wish you’d never been born for mocking. The reaction of looking at you like you just magically produced a basket of puppies isn’t a typical one. THIS ONE IS A KEEPER, MAKO.

Character Introduction ♕ Kate Kane (Batwoman)
Real Name: Katherine “Kate” Rebecca Kane
Base of operations: Gotham City
First appearance: 52 (#7)
Background: Kate Kane is the daughter of Jacob Kane and Gabi Kane, both parents members of the U.S. Army. She grew up with her parents and her twin sister Elizabeth “Beth” Kane until she, her mother and her sister were kidnapped. Her father located them, but he was too late because when he found them, her mother and her sister had been executed.
Years later, Kate decided to join the Army in order to honor the memory of her mother and sister. She was about to graduate, but her superiors were notified that she was in a relationship with another woman. They asked her to deny the charges so she could graduate, but she decided to tell them the truth, so she got discharged.
Kate then became a socialite and she met officer Renee Montoya. They started a relationship, but sadly, it didn’t last long. Soon after her break-up, she got attacked by a mugger and Batman saved her. This is how she decided to become a vigilante, and after some training, she becomes Batwoman.
Powers and abilities: Hand-to-hand combat, interrogation and intimidation skills, intellect, military education and training, gadgets (thanks to her fortune), stealth, tracking, agility.
Why you should read about her: Kate is currently one of the few LGBT characters who leads her own book in this industry, and if you want to read about a lesbian superhero, this might be what you’re looking for.
While she hasn’t only appeared on Batwoman, the writing and art of her solo title is usually very good, and Rucka made a great job building up her personality. The book shows us a nice balance between her life as a superhero and her personal life (you can actually see her relationships! Kate has dated amazing ladies, and she’s currently engaged
but DC sucks and won’t let us see her getting married).
Plus she teams up with Wonder Woman at some point. You can’t tell me that isn’t the most badass team.

"Stop objectifying me!!"
OHHOHOOOOO MY GOD BECAUSE WOMEN WEAR CLOTHES PURELY FOR OTHER PEOPLE AND NOT FOR THEMSELVES RIGHT??
Because all men have the brains of peas and if they have breasts in front of them THEY HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO STOP EVERYTHING AND LOOK. AND NOT STOP LOOKING. AND FORGET THAT THE WOMAN EVEN EXISTS.
Thanks for clearing it up. You see, I thought men were competent human beings ^_____^
Why do you wear a shirt that low cut, or a tube top, or shortshorts with “juicy” written across the ass, if you don’t want men to look at it?
Maybe because I like dressing like that. Maybe its hot outside and I want to let everything out.
Or maybe im a LESBIAN and want WOMEN to look at me ^_____^
fucking hell is it really that foreign a concept that maybe women wear things for THEMSELVES
EVEN IF SHE’S WEARING THE SHIRT IN ORDER TO BE LOOKED AT AND FOUND SEXUALLY APPEALING
THAT DOESN’T MEAN SHE WANTS TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH A PERSON WHO IS NOT ACKNOWLEDGING HER WORDS AND IS SOLELY ACKNOWLEDGING HER BREASTS
holy shit i don’t know why this is such a difficult concept to grasp
do women ever dress sexy because they want people to look at them? YES OF COURSE THEY DO
but that doesn’t mean they ONLY want to be found sexy
you might not have noticed, but women are multi-faceted people
it’s not too much to ask for someone to admire my cleavage and then have a conversation with me in which they treat me like a human being and look me in the eyes while i speak
That last comment, though.
Also, just because women wear something to be found sexually appealing by others doesn’t mean they are dressed that way to be found sexually appealing BY EVERY SINGLE PERSON THEY COME INTO CONTACT WITH.
Just because they wear something provocative so that attractive man with the nice eyes and smile who chats them up and who is charming and interested in who she is can find her sexually appealing doesn’t mean jackasses who think they’ve got a ticket to the free boob show are OWED her time and body because of it.
like the fuck. Let’s play a really awful logic game here and say you bake a dozen cupcakes and you baked them for the hell of it, you LIKE baking, and damn those cupcakes taste good. So you bring them out with you cos you have some friends that would also LOVE these cupcakes.
ANd on the way there some asshole just comes up to you and EATS a cupcake, just swipes it right off the fuckin plate. YOu’d be like what the fuck bro. “Oh I’m sorry weren’t these cupcakes meant to be EATIN?”
"WELL THEN YOU CAN’T BLAME ME FOR EATING THEM THEN CAN YOU???"
"YES YOU FUCKTRUCK COS IT’S MY CUPCAKE AND MY CHOICE WHO I SHARE MY DAMN CUPCAKES WITH. WHAT IS THIS LIKE FUCKIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. I DO NOT HAVE TO SHARE THE BREASTS WITH EVERY ONE IN THE CLASS, THAT IS NOT HOW THAT WORKS."
I like that the concept of women simultaneously wanting to be attractive and treated like a person says loads about the way how men instinctively dehumanize women with sexual agency. It’s like, if a woman is sexually attractive - or worse, if a woman is sexually attractive and knows it - they lose the right to be treated as a person, they’re an object, and you can’t blame men for treating them like that. And it’s really creepy yo

Doctor Who meme / nine scenes:Your collection? Well, was it worth it? Worth all those men’s deaths? Worth Rose? Let me tell you something, Van Statten, mankind goes into space to explore, to be part of something greater. You just want to drag the stars down and stick them underground beneath tons of sand and dirt and label them. You’re about as far from the stars as you can get. And you took her down with you. [8/9]
